Obituaries: June 5, 2014

BARBARA ANN ALLEN, 81 of Vero Beach, FL, formerly a resident of the North Carolina Mountains, died June 2nd. She came to live in North Carolina Colony off 65th Avenue in 1971. She transferred here with Southern Bell Phone Company from which she retired after 32 years. Her favorite work story was her pitching stint for the company softball team in Atlanta, GA for many years.

Barbara and her sister Grace Johnson were strong, loving workers in The First Baptist Church of Wabasso. They worked with children and youth. Missionaries at heart, they helped with the organization of Calvary Baptist when it was a mission. They went to Spain and Uruguay on mission trips and after retirement they worked with outreach and the care of the elderly in and around the Wabasso community.

Barbara is survived by her sisters Grace Johnson of Vero Beach; Iris Ledford, Bakersville, NC and Patricia Barnett, Atlanta, GA. She is predeceased by her sisters Dolores Hall, Lucille Scorborough and Betty Roland; and brothers Laurel and Jerry Allen.

Barbara is leaving a great legacy as a favorite aunt with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Only heaven has a record of her influence on their lives and those of many “adoptees.” A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1-2PM, Saturday, June 7th with a Celebration of her life beginning at 2PM all at the First Baptist Church of Wabasso, 4720 86th Street, Sebastian, FL.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to The Florida Baptist Children’s Home P.O. Box 8190 Lakeland, FL 33902, a ministry that was close to Barbara’s heart. STEPHANIE GUTIERREZ, 21, passed June 1, 2014 in Vero Beach, Florida. She was born in Norwood, Massachusetts and lived in Vero Beach since 1997 coming from Walpole, Massachusetts. She was a Medical Assistant at Partners in Women’s Health, Vero Beach. She was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church, Sebastian, Florida.
Survivors include daughter, Sophie Arcila Gutierrez; parents, Luis Carlos & Martha Gutierrez, all of Vero Beach; brothers, Andres Gutierrez and his wife, Angie Munoz of Sebastian and Victor Gutierrez of Orlando; niece, Catalina and nephew, Alexander Gutierrez Munoz; fiancé, Robert Smith of Vero Beach; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made directly to the family for their assistance in memory of Stephanie. Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday June 6, 2014 at Strunk Funeral Home, Sebastian, FL and 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Saturday June 7, 2014 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, Sebastian, Florida. JOSEPH P. IRVINE, 87, of Vero Beach, died June 2, 2014 at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach. Mr. Irvine was born in Chicago, IL and has lived in Vero Beach for 15 years coming from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Toledo, Toledo, OH and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

Mr. Irvine was a veteran of the United States Merchant Marines serving during World War II both in the Pacific and European Campaigns. He enjoyed a long career in the pest control industry most recently with Truly Nolan Pest Control where he retired in 1990 as Vice President of Marketing. He was a member of The Community Church, Vero Beach, FL.

Mr. Irvine was a very active member of the Kiwanis both in Ft. Lauderdale and Vero Beach for many years. He was a member of Indian River Club, Vero Beach, FL.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Kathryn Brown Irvine of Vero Beach; sons, Douglas Stuart Irvine (Catherine M.) and Bruce Edwin Irvine (Barbara J.) both of Atlanta, GA; daughters, Lynn Irvine Price (Charles David) of Franklin, TN and Judith Irvine Terrell of Atlanta, GA; stepson, Douglas Andre Irvine (Michelle Doss) of Ft. Myers, FL; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; first wife, Jean Brough Danowski of Atlanta, GA and sister, Lydia Irvine Colwell of Exeter, NH.
